Our history

"On our tours, you won't just see ancient monuments and mounds of rocks. You will enter into the living history of a rich and proud land".

Few places on earth can display virtually the entire course of human development within a few hundred square kilometers. Because of its strategic historical position, Jordan is today a living history book. Every major period of history - from the Paleolithic Age to the Modern Era - can be traced across Jordan's soil.

Ancient farming and irrigation techniques, commercial enterprises, the settlements of people into communities, all have historical roots in Jordan. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman civilizations have each left their enduring mark.

The heritage of humanity resides in the soil, the sand, and the stones of Jordan today. The story of Jordan down through the ages is a story of people, and Discovery tours help you sense the common link we all share as fellow human beings living out the drama of history on earth.

Our archaeology

"Experiencing the archeology of Jordan on a DISCOVERY tour puts you back into the lives of our ancestors and explains the forces which shaped their development".

For the archeologist who comes to Jordan, the question is where to begin! Jordan is home to over 184,000 registered sites. There is so much to see that a visitor can only begin to scratch the surface of archeological evidence. It would be impossible to be in Jordan without seeing the Nabatean wonder of Petra, or the fantastic remains of the Roman City of Jerash.

Discovery cannot only enrich tours of the country's major archeological sites, but because of our expertise, we also have the ability to reveal the complete picture of existing remains from such varied locations as Deir Alla to the exciting recent finds at Lot's Cave near the Dead Sea.

Some of the Bible's most important personalities: Lot, Moses, John the Baptist and Jesus Christ traced many of their steps east of the River Jordan. The legacy of their followers continued down through the ages on Jordan's soil. Rich mosaics are found in sites across the land, including the world's first mosaic map in Madaba.

Discovery can design specialized tours according to what you wish to see, explore, or study. We can provide a range of experiences, from introductory visits to in-depth field exposures to meet the needs of both the casual visitor and the serious scholar.
